our AI overlords
Last night, I watched something that shook me.
An interview with an AI researcher. He thinks AI will kill us all.
But not the panicky type that got sucked into some conspiracy theory - this guy has been tackling the same problem for over 20 years.
He’s thought to be one of the few on the frontier of AI research.
And he is defeated.
He doesn’t see any other outcome to the rapid development of AI.
And he wasn’t talking about Chat GPT 3, Open AI, etc.
He was talking about the AI down the line that can make its own AI.
Think Chat GPT 7.
Dancing robots from Boston Dynamics?
Nah. Think about the ones that can do everything we can do 100x better and are sentient.
It all comes down to this one point.
We can’t imagine what a super-intelligent being would do with unlimited technical power.
Can ants comprehend humans?
That’s the scale, according to him. That’s where we’re headed.
And that’s just the beginning.
Anyway, I’m an optimist. But even this interview kicked me in the taint.
Because what can you do in the face of impending doom?
Especially when it’s more tangible and foreseeable than other major problems like climate change or nuclear war.
He did mention one thing though…a barely visible light of hope.
For people to break current systems by experimenting.
Not just throwing all the cognitive power and resources we have at building AO up. But also breaking it down by doing weird stuff.
Kind of how Bitcoin came after the 2008 Financial Crisis.
Replace the old with the new.
For me, the first place to start is stories.
All those Science Fiction writers that poured countless hours of creative energy into imagining the future…
Fiction as warnings of “what not to do.”
And still, here we are.
But, I know as I writer, that’s what I’m here to do. Write stories that challenge the status quo.
I wrote about AI in my first novel back in 2016, Kyosei.
You can still get that for free on Amazon by the way.
It’s a short book, so you can read it in one sitting. All I ask is for you to leave me an honest review, because it helps new readers make a decision.
Stories help, but so do other fundamental human things.
Like community.
Meeting. Sharing stories, laughs, and feelings.
Some of you may cringe at “feelings”. But I cringe at people who can’t share ‘em.
Smothering how ya feel will only make you feel worse.
Which is why…I’m excited to see Chris Rock’s new Netflix special. Apparently, he goes in on the Will Smith slap - rightfully so.
Annnd bringing it back to AI.
Another way to uplift human things is through handcrafted goods.
But they’re dying out.
Especially in Japan.
This is the major inspiration behind my Dome House Project.
I plan on launching the crowdfunding campaign in the coming days, but there are still some experiments I want to run before firing it up.
One being…crypto.
For those of you that have Bitcoin or Ethereum, choose on the answers in the poll below. It helps me tailor my crowdfunding campaign for the best results out the gate.
Peace,
Brandon “we can make or break AI“ Chin
